Southeast's Walkout

March 14th, 2018

The Women's Youth Empower Group planned a national school walkout centered around the tragic school shooting on February 14th, 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida.

Many Southeast's students participated and walked out of their third period classrooms at 10:00 a.m. and returned at 10:17 a.m. The walkout lasted for 17 mins in remembrance of the 17.

Walkout Guilines & Procedures

  •  Students could only go to the courtyard, east/west hallway as the designated area. (They Could not exit the campus).  Any teacher volunteers (without a class) who were willing to assist could do so. Students who participated from the buildings/portables other than the 700/800 building needed to report the courtyard area.

  •  Students could decide to stay in their classroom and not participate. However, they could not remain in the classroom and disrupt the learning environment for others.

  • Admin/Leadership team were stationed around the designated area for supervision.

  • Teachers could not encourage/discourage students to participate. They could express any political views while on duty. However, any staff could participate if they had class coverage.

  • Teachers who had their entire class participate assisted with supervision.

  • Teachers could agree among themselves to cover classes so others could attend.

  • No parents were allowed on the main area of the campus (within the orange doors). If they wanted to sign their student out and stand with them in a designated area near the school, that was acceptable ( i.e. parking lot).

  • A and B lunch periods were pushed back. Students who participated had to leave their belongings in class and were required to return to their 3rd period class at 10:17.
