Hosting a Speech & Debate Meet

February 17th, 2018

Although Saturday, February 10, 2015, was not a school day, students could be found on campus as Southeast’s Speech and Debate hosted the meet. The club’s adviser, Cathy Strate, arrived on campus early at six am to begin the preparations with the help of her debate members and National Honors Society (NHS) members.  Within a couple hours, the media center was transformed into a suitable place to welcome judges. Breakfast consisted of an assortment of bagels, cream cheese, sweets, and coffee which fueled them for the long day to come.  As speech and Debate students, middle and high schoolers, arrived from schools such as King High School, Strawberry Crest High School, Carrollwood Day School, and St. Pete High School, they were directed to the media center. There, many chose to prepare for their competitions and purchase snacks from two of our NHS students who were sold snacks and drink for a dollar all day. Around ten, culinary members began preparing the cafeteria by bringing in equipment to feed the many students in attendance. Lunch consisted of chili and cornbread as well with the choice of sweet or unsweetened tea. After eating lunch in between their competitions, they resumed preparing and practicing.

Although Southeast’s Speech and Debate students have competed in original oratory, extemporaneous and declamation, last Saturday they only competed in congressional and public forum debate. As a result, they won first-third place in congressional debate, first in public forum debate and third in public forum debate!

Which category would you do well in?

Original Oratory

  • What is it?

  • Student competitors craft an argument on a topic of their choosing which they will deliver a ten-minute speech on from memory. They aim to limited direct quotes yet use evidence and emotional appeals to inform or persuade.

  • Example Topics

  • White lies, Body image

Public Forum Debate

  • What is it?

  • Two opposing teams debate a current event topic. The winners of a coin toss chose whether to debate PRO or CON or whether they prefer to go first or second.  Students present their positions, do rebuttals and crossfires.

  • Past Topics

  • Resolved: The benefits of post-9/11 security measures outweigh the harms to personal freedom (National Speech & Debate Association).

Extemporaneous Speaking

  • What is it?

  • Student competitors are given a choice of three questions which pertain to current events in the U.S.  With the 30 minutes they are given to prepare, they use articles and evidence but not the internet to write a seven-minute speech that answers the questions.

  • Past Questions

  • “What has been the most important national news story of 2014?” (National Speech & Debate Association)

Congressional Debate

  • What is it?

  • As a simulation of the “U.S legislative process (National Speech & Debate Association) in the Senate and the House” the debaters who are called Senators and Representatives create a series of bill and resolutions. Also, they deliver speeches for and against a topic. A presiding officer who is also a student ensures the debate “flows smoothly” (National Speech & Debate Association).

  • Past Legislation Titles

  • "Bill Concerning Raising the Federal Minimum Wage" (National Speech & Debate Association)
